Results of the 4th National Oral Health Survey were published.
The 4th National Oral Health Survey of China was conducted in 2015 and the results of the survey was published in 2018. Totally, 172 425 people in 5 age-groups, 3-5, 12-15, 35-44, 55-64, 65-74 ages, came from 1116 sample sites around all 31 provinces in Mainland of China were selected as the study sample. The results showed that the prevalence of caries experience in 5-year-old children was 71.9% and the mean dmft score was 2.28. While in the 12-year-old students, the prevalence of caries experience was 38.5% and the mean DMFT score was 0.86. Furthermore, it was found that the prevalence and the severity of caries had been increased during the last 10 years. Bleeding on probing was found in over half of the subjects aged over 12-year-old. Among adults and the elders, 15% of them was found to have periodontal pocket depth over 6mm. Although the oral health status in China was getting worse than those in ten years ago, the mean number of remained teeth in the elders was increased 1.5.
The nation project on comprehensive oral health care for children
The nation project on comprehensive oral health care for children was financially supported by the Central Government in the year 2008. Only 22 provinces in the central and western areas were included into the project in the beginning. It has been expended to cover all the 31 provinces in the mainland from 2012 with the additional financial support by the local provincial governments afterwards. It focuses on oral health education and preventive measures for children. It covered 793 counties or district among 2900 counties or districts in China in 2016. More than 3000 thousands children are beneficial from this project yearly.
China Oral Health Foundation (COHF)
The China Oral Health Foundation was found in 1994. It was the first non-government organization in dentistry registered in the Ministry of Civil Affair and it is the only charitable non-profit foundation in dentistry in China. The aim of the foundation is to improve oral health status of the Chinese population.
This year, we lunched projects – “Love teeth angles- oral health care for children”. It provides oral health education, dental check-up, and topical fluoride application for children twice a year for 3 years through training the dentists in private dental clinics and in county-level oral health care centers.
We set up a training project – Pink Action -dental scaling training course, which recruits qualified training volunteer teachers with the background of periodontal education, and provides training course on dental scaling in the training centers.
We organized a capability improvement program on undergraduate dental students and new graduations, which is to provide on-line training course on dental skills and on-site pre-clinic trainings step-by-step.
We held the first China Dental Microscopy Congress in Beijing in December, which is to introduce the microscopy techniques in all discipline in dentistry and improve the application of microscope in dental care.
